Thesaurus UB (THUB) - What is it?

What is it?

The Thesaurus of the University of Barcelona (THUB) is a vocabulary that facilitates consultation by subject in Cercabib (UB CRAI's discovery tool) because:

  • Standardizes the way of accessing subject indexes
  • Unambigously identifies the searched term
  • Groups document based on accepted forms

THUB is the structured and controlled vocabulary that is used as a basic tool for indexing and retrieval by subject of all the information resources of the CRAI of the University of Barcelona.

The THUB is a multidisciplinary thesaurus in Catalan that includes terms that designate concepts of the various specialties that are the field of action and interest of the UB.

The THUB can also be a useful terminological research tool due to its hierarchical and associative structure, and classification by categories, which are the basis of the UB Microthesaurus.

Area of application

The THUB is used in the indexing and conceptual retrieval of all the information resources of the CRAI of the UB in the different search applications available to it. It is therefore the vocabulary for indexing these resources described in:

  • Cercabib (UB CRAI's discovery tool) and the Collective Catalog of the Universities of Catalonia (CCUC)
  • The UB Digital Repository and the set of external repositories in which the UB participates: RACO, RECERCAT, TDX and MDX
  • The Digital Memory of Catalonia, consortium repository for the description of heritage collections
  • Other databases owned by the institution, such as the UBTV.

Currently, (October 2023) the THUB contains 29.122 descriptors, of which:

  • 21.929 are thematic descriptors
  • 6.882 are geographical descriptors
  • 311 are genre/form descriptors

The thesaurus also incorporates equivalences of the preferred terms in Spanish, English and French. Currently, 90% of THUB authority records contain equivalences in these three languages, which are the basis of the current multilingual structure.
