Working formats

Digital documents are most often used for preservation purposes or to facilitate access. Different formats are recommended depending on the intended use:

Preservation: to preserve an exact copy of the original document.

Access: to provide quick access to a quality text and/or image file via a server (online access).

The format, resolution, definition and/or compression will depend on the type of document and usage requirements. Remember, the higher the image resolution, i.e. the more dots per inch (dpi), the more disk space the file will take up, with the ensuing increase in cost. The choice of format can affect how the file can be used in future, the possibility of transforming the content, the ease of preservation, etc.

Before beginning a digitization project, you should thus have a clear idea of what you wish to digitize and why and have analysed the collection to decide which criteria to apply.
