Open Access publishing: funds, discounts and vouchers

Publications resulting from completed 7th Framework Programme (FP7) projects

The European Commission, through the OpenAIRE project, has launched a pilot scheme to fund Open Access publication of the results of completed FP7 research projects.

This initiative, known as the FP7 Post-Grant Gold Open Access Pilot, is an additional instrument to improve access to the results of FP7 research projects, and allows for Open Access publication of articles and monographs up to two years after the end date for a project.

Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) voucher codes

The University of Barcelona, through the CSUC, subscribed to the Gold for Golf of Royal Society of Chemistry programme. This subscription provides the University of Barcelona community with access to all of the RSC’s: online journal, database and magazine content.

The RSC programme provides subscribers with a number of voucher codes to publish papers in Open Access in RSC publications free of charge. The number of voucher codes an institution receives is determined according to the subscription fee applied in each case. The University of Barcelona currently has fifteen voucher codes, which will be allocated in order of application, provided applicable requirements are met.

University of Barcelona funding for Open Access publishing

This year the Vice-rectorate for Ph.D. and Research Promotion makes available to the community of the University of Barcelona a new call for grants to publish in open access scientific journals, framed in the policy for supporting the free dissemination of knowledge. The budget for this call is 75,000 euros.

MDPI maintains discount to publish in its journals

In 2017, MDPI (Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute) is once again offering University of Barcelona researchers a discount of 25% on the standard fee they charge to publish accepted articles in any of their journals. This economic incentive is the result of a programme aimed at strengthening the link between the Swiss publishing group and prestigious research and higher education institutions such as the University of Barcelona. The discounts are an effective tool for increasing Open Access publication of university research results.

This is the fourth year running that the University of Barcelona has participated in MDPI’s membership programme, which has facilitated and reduced the cost of publishing a total of 109 scientific articles by University of Barcelona researchers. To request this discount, authors should identify themselves as University of Barcelona members when they deal with an MDPI journal to arrange for the publication of a research article. These special terms will remain in effect until 28 February 2018.
